Trusting the Voice Within
A guide for anyone longing to slow down, listen deeply, and trust themselves again
Oh, Christina Aguilera… Are you with me? “When there’s no one else, look inside yourself. Like your oldest friend, just trust the voice within. Then you’ll find the strength that will guide your way. You’ll learn to begin to trust the voice within.”
Trusting your intuition. Listening to your Higher Self. Following your gut. Feeling your vibes. All of these subjects are much talked about in books, on podcasts, in interviews, and in circles of friends. At least my friends. It is such a hot topic and it’s different for each one of us. I would love to hear what you call your inner guidance in the comments!
I would be remiss if I didn’t reference the eternally inspiring Martin Luther King, Jr., on his honorary holiday. “A riot is the language of the unheard,” he said, referencing the economic plight that people of color face – unfortunately still to this day. Using our voice is something we can do and when we listen to and follow our truth we don’t have to worry about the body rioting against ourselves.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I love my Sonia Choquette oracle card deck Trust Your Vibes, the same name as her bestselling book. Name Your Higher Self is the card I’m referencing in today’s newsletter as it is the one that really awakened me to my ability to connect with that version of me. I call mine June Wise. I’d like to say that I talk to her all the time, but honestly, some of the other characters in my mind are a bit louder and more distracting than I’d like to admit.
Also, sometimes, when I ask June Wise a question and wait for a response, I don’t hear anything. When I recognize that I’m all up in my head about it, I can drop my awareness lower by about 2.5-3 feet into my heart and breathe here. That still doesn’t mean that I’ll hear anything. Even if I breathe here for 5 minutes, I might not HEAR anything. But I might start to PERCEIVE.
“I don’t want to be perceived.” ~Rosanne Bailey
Perception is part of this sixth sense that we all have. The intuition. The “knowing.” Again, so many names. It can be hard to put language to concepts that are so deep and moving to each of us on a soul level. And we all probably know what it is like to perceive something without actually being able to see, hear, taste, smell, or physically feel it.
So when I am able to drop into my heart and get my mind quiet (just shush already) I can perceive things happening in my body. Perhaps my back finally relaxes after being held upright for so long. Maybe I feel my heart rate lower, and I naturally take a deeper breath. If my mind jumps in with, “Ok, so, what’s the answer?” it’s time to drop lower. If I have the luxury of making this time for myself and continue to feel deeper into my body without allowing my mind to continue demanding for the answer, then I might finally find a sensation that feels like the answer. But not if I rush it.
I wrote three newsletters about this inner wisdom, the first “SAD? Listen to Your Body” from December 2023, brought in Ayurvedic wisdom around the circadian rhythms and the doshic clock. Check it out for many ways to bring balance in through these natural cycles by utilizing certain times of the day for certain activities. The second, “How to Listen to Your Body” was published on January 19, 2025 – a year to the date of this one – and you can now listen to it in 6:19 minutes! It goes into the nervous system and techniques like mindful breathing and eating, and healthy sleeping habits.
The third, and most recent, “How to Slow Down and Listen to Your Inner Guru” published in April of 2025, which also now has a six-minute voiceover option, connects to this idea of creating space in your body and mind to hear the subtle brilliance alive in our cells.1
So this practice of perceiving with our sixth sense, how can we utilize it in the moment? For me, I can access it when I need it if I connect with my breath and deepen it. Sometimes it helps to close my eyes if I’m able. Because of my meditation practice, I have the ability to tap into that sense of calm more easily than I could seven years ago. If I’m still not calm from deepening my breath, I can take the Bhramari technique complete with Shanmukhi/Bhramari mudra - the hands covering the face, sensory-deprivation mudra accompanied by my very own hum, until I find my way back to center. Once my body and mind are calm, I can listen for that inner wisdom. This corresponds to the STOP technique which encourages awareness by stopping to breathe and observe before proceeding when in a stress response.
Another voice I’ve been hearing more of since the incredible Soul Magic La Jolla in July 2025, is that of my guide who has chosen to be known as Gabriel. Stay tuned for some of the incredible messages I have received and, in the meantime, look inside, get quiet, go deep, and sense the messages there for you to receive! Check the footnote for my offerings if you’re wanting a guide for the journey.
